The Galle Lighthouse, also known as Point de Galle Light, is one of the most iconic landmarks inside the historic Galle Fort. Standing tall near the southeastern edge of the fort walls, this lighthouse not only guides ships safely along Sri Lanka’s southern coast but also attracts countless visitors with its postcard perfect charm. Key Facts: 📍 Location: Within Galle Fort, near the ramparts and beach area 🕯️ Built: The original lighthouse was built in 1848, but the current structure was completed in 1939 📏 Height: 26.5 meters (87 feet) 💡 Function: An active lighthouse maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority With the shimmering Indian Ocean as its backdrop and swaying palm trees nearby, the white cylindrical tower of the Galle Lighthouse makes it one of the most photographed spots in the fort. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch local life unfold from kids playing cricket to fishermen casting their nets. Although the lighthouse itself is not open to the public for climbing, the surrounding area is perfect for a stroll. It’s especially stunning during golden hour, making it a favourite for sunset seekers and photographers.
