About Hakgala Botanical Garden Nature’s Blooming Masterpiece

Located about 10 km from Nuwara Eliya, the Hakgala Botanical Garden is the second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka and one of the most beautifully maintained green spaces in the country. Situated at an elevation of 1,745 to 2,000 meters above sea level, the garden enjoys a cool, misty climate that allows thousands of species of plants to flourish. Established in 1861 as an experimental garden for cinchona (used to make quinine), it later evolved into a vibrant botanical collection with over 10,000 species of flora, including orchids, roses, ferns, and towering trees. Framed by the Hakgala Rock and surrounded by misty hills, this is a place where nature lovers, photographers, and families can enjoy a calm, colourful escape.
