About Kiri Vehera The Sacred White Stupa of Kataragama

Kiri Vehera, meaning “Milk White Stupa,” is a revered Buddhist monument located in the heart of Kataragama, just a short walk from the Maha Devalaya (Kataragama Temple). Towering peacefully amidst the spiritual energy of this sacred town, Kiri Vehera is believed to date back to the 2nd century BCE, making it one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most significant Buddhist stupas.

It is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists across Sri Lanka, and is believed to mark the spot where Lord Buddha himself visited and preached during his third and final visit to the island.

Tips for Visitors

  • Wear white or light coloured modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Remove shoes and hats before entering the sacred premises.
  • Keep a respectful distance when photographing.

Kiri Vehera is a tranquil and sacred space that offers a deeper connection to Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. Whether you’re a pilgrim or a visitor, this ancient stupa invites peace, reflection, and a sense of spiritual calm that leaves a lasting impression.
