About Mihintale The Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
Located about 12 km from Anuradhapura, Mihintale is a serene hill dotted with ancient stupas, stone stairways, and forest covered ruins. It is believed to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, following the meeting between Arahat Mahinda (son of Indian Emperor Ashoka) and King Devanampiya Tissa.
Today, Mihintale is not just an important pilgrimage site, but also a beautiful place for hiking, exploring ancient ruins, and soaking in panoramic views of Sri Lanka’s North Central plains.
