About Minneriya National Park Home of the Great Elephant Gathering

Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Minneriya National Park is world famous for its annual “Elephant Gathering” the largest meeting of Asian elephants seen anywhere in the world. This park is a must visit for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and anyone wanting to witness wild elephants in their natural habitat.

Covering an area of around 8890 hectares, Minneriya is centered around the ancient Minneriya Tank (reservoir) built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. The combination of dry evergreen forest, wetlands, and grasslands makes it a perfect sanctuary for a variety of species, not just elephants.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:30–6:00 PM) for best wildlife viewing

Things to Do

1. See the Great Elephant Gathering 
Visit between July and October to witness hundreds of wild elephants gather around the tank during the dry season one of Asia’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

2. Go on a Jeep Safari
Explore the park with a guided 4x4 safari tour. Spot elephants, deer, crocodiles, birds, and more in a thrilling open air adventure.

3. Birdwatching
Over 160 species of birds can be found, including painted storks, pelicans, eagles, and endemic species like the Sri Lanka junglefowl.

4. Spot Other Wildlife
Look out for leopards (rare), sloth bears, toque macaques, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild buffalo, and monitor lizards.

5. Watch the Sunset over Minneriya Tank
A peaceful end to the safari the calm waters reflect the sky, and elephants often roam near the reservoir in the golden light.

6. Explore Nearby Cultural Sites
Combine your safari with a visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress or Dambulla Cave Temple, both less than an hour away.

7. Learn from a Local Guide
Most safaris include a knowledgeable local naturalist who can explain animal behaviour, local ecology, and conservation efforts.
