About Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque) A Landmark of Colombo’s Skyline
Best Time to Visit
Early morning (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM) or late afternoon (after 3:30 PM) Avoid Friday noon (Jumu’ah prayers) and main prayer times out of respect.

Things to Do
1. Admire the Unique Architecture
Marvel at the red and white patterned facade, onion shaped domes, and curving arches.
It's one of the most photographed buildings in Colombo.

Non Muslims are sometimes permitted inside outside of prayer times, but always ask respectfully at the entrance.
Women may be asked to wear a robe or scarf, which is often provided.
3. Take Photos from Outside
Even if you don’t go inside, the street view of the mosque is stunning, especially in early morning light.
4. Walk Through Pettah Market
Located right next to Colombo’s busiest bazaar.
Experience the sights, sounds, and smells of Colombo’s local trading scene.
5. Talk to the Locals
Friendly shopkeepers and mosque caretakers are often open to sharing stories about the building's history and significance.
6. Spot the Minarets from Afar
The mosque’s striking dome and minarets are visible from far across the Pettah area.
Try rooftop cafes nearby for a panoramic photo opportunity.
