Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is a 200 meter high ancient rock fortress located in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, this massive granite outcrop was transformed into a royal palace complex, featuring moats, water gardens, fountains, frescoes, mirror walls, and a grand entrance shaped like a lion.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is not just a climb it’s a journey through engineering genius, artistic beauty, and cultural legacy that continues to inspire awe in visitors from around the world.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (7:00–9:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:30–5:30 PM) to avoid the heat and crowds

Things to Do

1. Climb the Rock Fortress (1200+ steps)
A moderately challenging climb up staircases and pathways carved into the rock.
Rewarded with incredible history and unbeatable 360° views at the top.

2. Marvel at the Sigiriya Frescoes 
Halfway up the rock are vibrant 5th century frescoes of celestial maidens (“Sigiriya Damsels”) painted in natural pigments.

3. Walk Along the Mirror Wall
A smooth, ancient wall that once reflected the king’s image.
Features ancient graffiti from visitors dating back over 1000 years.

4. Pass Through the Lion’s Gate 
The grand entrance to the upper palace, flanked by two massive lion paws carved from rock all that remains of a once colossal lion structure.

5. Explore the Summit Ruins
Discover the remains of the royal palace, audience halls, throne room, and bathing pools at the top of the rock.

6. Admire the Water Gardens
Geometrically designed royal gardens with pools, fountains, and island pavilions that show off ancient hydrological engineering.

7. Visit the Boulder Gardens
A maze of winding paths, caves, and monastic ruins at the base of the rock used by monks before King Kashyapa’s reign.

8. Explore the Terraced Gardens
Terraces cut into the rock slope, forming part of the world’s oldest landscaped gardens still in existence.

9. Watch the Sunrise or Sunset
For amazing lighting and cooler weather, climb early morning or late afternoon.
Sunrise views from the summit are especially magical.

10. Learn at the Sigiriya Museum
Visit the on site museum to gain deeper insight into the site's history, excavation work, and ancient royal life.

  • Entry is regulated no drones, no littering, and respectful attire encouraged
